Sergeant Alan Haywood has been with the Arizona Department of Public Safety for sixteen years. He is currently assigned as a supervisor for the DPS Vehicular Crimes Unit, Major Crimes District. He is currently assigned as a supervisor for the DPS Vehicular Crimes Unit, Major Crimes District.
Sergeant Haywood’s previous assignments included positions as a Patrol Supervisor for Central Patrol, a Detective with the Vehicular Crimes Unit, the Impaired Driving Training Coordinator at DPS, at the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety as the State Phlebotomy Coordinator and various other Impaired Driver related programs. Prior to his assignment at GOHS, he was the Impaired Driver Training Coordinator at Arizona DPS, encompassing the DRE, SFST, and Phlebotomy Training Programs. Prior to that assignment, Haywood was assigned as a Trooper with the Highway Patrol Division assigned to the Metro DUI Enforcement Unit.
Alan Haywood has been a Drug Recognition Expert since 2003, A DRE Instructor since 2004, as well as an instructor in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driver Enforcement (ARIDE), Drug Impairment Training for Education Professionals (DITEP), and Older Driver Education. Haywood has been a law enforcement phlebotomist since June 2002. He holds a degree in Law Enforcement Technology and is adjunct faculty at Maricopa County Community Colleges. He has presented at numerous seminars around Arizona and nationally on impaired driver related subjects, including the Law Enforcement Phlebotomy Program, Field Sobriety Testing, Drug Recognition, restraint safety, and numerous other highway safety programs. Haywood has received numerous awards for his contributions to traffic safety, including the 2002 and 2008 Arizona MADD Award for Outstanding DPS Officer, the FOP Outstanding DPS Officer, and Officer of the year three times for the different DPS divisions he has worked.
